Judging Ourselves on Intentions

Have a little think about that…

“We often judge ourselves based on our intentions… yet we judge others based on our expectations”.

Yup. Pretty deep stuff, right?

Isn’t that crazy? How do we never judge ourselves based on the same criteria that we have set out for other people?

As Wes put it, it’s almost like we are always giving more leeway to ourselves. We aren’t as harsh on ourselves.

“Oh… ya know I didn’t get much sleep…, or I was late for work or whatever it is”.

This always reminds me of a li’l story I’ll never forget.

OK. So let’s set the scene here:

It was about 2-3 years ago. And for those of you who know… we run a business selling BBQ equipment (shameless plug). And we used to run it out of a warehouse.

And this was back when we had like no fancy warehouse management systems or any of that sorta thing.

All we had was this big badass spreadsheet.

So at the end of the week, we could run the numbers on this thing.

But one day, we were running out of inventory. The guy who runs this thing was called Matt.

He had nothing to say to me. And he could tell I was pissed.

But it was only five minutes or so after the conversation that I stopped and thought to myself.

I realized that Matt didn’t have the intention of screwing things up. He didn’t wake up and ask, ‘how can I ruin Kosmo’s day today.’

He was literally just overworked. So, I went, apologized to him, and thought about it again. Looking back, that was one of the best things that could’ve happened. It gave us the chance to switch from our old way of doing this to the new way, which worked so much better.

Business = Problems

This is another great quote that a friend of mine told me. He said, “Your business is broken, and if you’re lucky, it always will be.”

At first, I was super confused - “That makes no sense,” I thought to myself.

So I went ahead and asked him more about it, and he explained it to me. He said that any business which has no problems has gone out of business.

And then I realized how true it was.

At the end of the day, when people don’t fail, they don’t grow. And that’s the truth behind it, really.

I mean, I never liked to see people fail, but sometimes it’s a necessity to grow.
