Episode 6: Do the Hard Stuff First

Episode 6: Do the Hard Stuff First

If you’ve made it this far, you’ve learned quite a bit about where I came from and how I got here.

But how about what I’m doin’ now? I’m divin’ into a motto I live by everyday called “do the hard stuff first.”

It’s been a life-changing concept for me and I think it will be for you too.

Mark Twain and I… Pretty Much the Same

When I first heard Mark Twain’s quote, “If your job is to eat a frog, I suggest you do it early. And if your job is to eat two, I suggest you start with the big one first” I immediately thought -

“My gosh, Mark Twain and I are pretty much the same person…”

…Well maybe not exactly the same! But it’s clear we both share the same concept of doin’ the hard stuff first.

Lemme give you an example - a while back the doctors found a clog in my heart and I knew it was time to straighten up. So as much as I hate working out, I committed to getting up at 5 am every day so I can fit it in and I stick to it - no matter how I feel.

And guess what happened? My health got much better!

So when you’re faced with doing something you SHOULD do, but HATE doing - don’t tell me you don't have the time…you MAKE the time…

Trust me - I’m living proof.

Feelin’ a Man’s Soul Leave His Body

Have you ever done Jiu Jitsu?

My Sensei once told me, “You can feel when a man’s soul leaves his body.”

What I believe he meant was, you can physically feel when a person mentally gives up.

I never quite understood that until I actually felt someone mentally give up. It was one of the craziest things I've ever experienced and a main reason I live by the motto - do the hard stuff first.

It’s even how I structure my day. I load my mornings heavy and keep my afternoons light because I wanna knock everything out that I can first thing in the morning.

It’s also how I structure my week. I load it heavy on the front of my week and light on the latter part because when I get the hard stuff off my plate first, it takes the mental strain off my plate too so I can enjoy more of my life.

No One Gives a Shit About You

I’m gonna be honest with ya’- if you leave me to my own devices and I have no purpose or calling, I’ll revert back to who I used to be real quick.

One of the hardest - but most freeing - things I learned in life is, no one gives a shit about me the way that I give a shit about me.

Whether I am successful tomorrow, or get hit by a bus tomorrow, the world doesn't care.

My future is on me to make it happen.

So the only way to make yourself better is by increasing your standards.

Expect more from yourself.

Do more. Be more.

When you keep commitments you make to yourself, you start to develop a new standard… and that’s what matters most.

I Wasn’t Allowed to Have Money

I used to believe I wasn’t allowed to have money. It’s not anything that was ever told to me or put into my head, but I remember being at the golf course in El Reno, lookin’ around at all the rich people thinking, “I’m not supposed to be here.”

It’s the story I told myself from a very young age and one I carried with me most of my life…

It stuck with me all the way up until I was sitting in a 7/11 parking lot eating my lunch on break from drivin’ my route truck. While I ate, I looked up sales from my Kosmo’s Q website business and what I saw shocked me!...

I had made a thousand dollars of revenue off of our website in one week. That’s when it hit me.

My gosh, I’ve been lyin’ to myself this whole time.

I can have money!

From a Hallway Closet

Something switched in my at that moment and I knew I could have money but it was gonna take work.

At the time Kosmo’s Q operated out of a hallway closet. I’d wake up at 5 am every morning to check and print the five or six orders that came in overnight. Then I’d package ‘em up myself and drive ‘em to the post office.

Later, I’d come home to check orders again, have some lunch, and then start my “real job” for the next 12 hours - only to get home late and do it all over again.

Eventually I realized, I’m putin’ in the work, I’m doin’ the hard things, and I’m the one that’s keepin’ this whole thing goin’! I have what it takes!

But it’s nothin’ fancy. It’s just hard work.

All those people that think I’m just lucky, or feel like they just “can’t catch a break” have no business bein’ around me.

Get those people away from me. I don’t even want to be around them. It’s not about luck. It’s about work.

Because here’s the truth - we hold others accountable to our expectations, but we hold ourselves accountable to our intentions.

See, no one cares what you intended to do. It’s what you actually did that matters.

Don’t just intend to work hard. Do it!
