Episode 53: 3 Things You MUST Know Before You Get Started in BBQ Competitions
Hey everybody and welcome, welcome, welcome to yet another episode of Kosmo Unfiltered.
And today’s episode, is a very special episode, ladies and gentleman.
But first of all… as usual… I’m joined by my man, Wes.
“But Kosmo, you say every episode is special, what makes this episode any different?!?”
Well, ladies and gentleman, today I’m gonna be sharing 3 things you need to know before you get started in competition barbecue.
If you’ve ever competed in barbecue before or if you enjoy competition barbecue or if you ever watch competition barbecue on TV, then this episode is for you.
So let’s get into it!
But first, if you like the episode then feel free to drop us a like or a comment on whatever platform you’re watching on.
And if you really like the episode, then why not share it with a friend? After all, we don’t run ads or do any of that kind of garbage!
So let’s get started!
This S*** is Expensive
One of the first things you gotta understand about competition barbecue is that this s*** is expensive.
I mean when I got started, a brisket was only around 40-50 bucks. I mean you could get to a competition for around 250 bucks.
But now, in 2022… You’re gonna fork out $1-2k for the same experience.
Just with all the meats they’re using, the briskets and competition entry fees, man it’s ridiculous.
I mean at the end of the day, unless you got that kinda money lying down the back of your sofa, then you have to be pretty damn serious about this kinda stuff.
Which leads me onto the second thing…
You’re Gonna Do a Ton of Traveling
I mean I won’t sugarcoat this one - you are going to have to travel a lot!
I mean even where I’m from, there’s a ton of competitions nearby, but still so much time spent on the road.
Like I remember sometimes leaving a competition then driving for 7 hours to get back home.
And let me be honest, that’s not a lot of time… unless you gotta get to work on Monday morning, or when you got a family, because that’s when it becomes a real pain.
(And now, you gotta take the gas prices into account too.)
So unless you’re totally committed to it, then it’s gonna be very difficult to make something like this work.
The Number One Thing
But on a slightly more positive note… one of the best things about competition BBQ is that…
You’re gonna make some of the best friends you’ve ever had in your life.
I mean I still got people who I talk to every single day. And some of them I might not see for 1 or 2 years, but we’ll call each other and check in on one another.
They are honestly some of the best people you’ll ever meet on the planet - apart from once…
When you ask them to tell you a little secret, that’s when they might not be 100% honest with ya.
Well I say that… I mean chances are they’re just gonna lie straight to your face.
But after all… it’s competition barbecue, what did you expect?
But still… easily some of the best people you’re ever gonna meet in your life!
