Episode 48: The Crazy Story Behind My First $100k Product
Hello and welcome, welcome, welcome to yet another episode of Kosmo Unfiltered.
Once again, as per usual… It's me, Kosmo, and I’m joined by my boy, Wes…
And today’s episode is gonna be a little bit different from normal.
Well today’s episode is all about a story.
Today, I’m gonna tell the crazy story behind the first $100k product that we sold.
And *Spoiler Alert* I didn’t even realize we sold $100k worth until long after…
So without further ado, let’s get right into it!
How a Coke and Jack Made me $100k
Picture the scene:
… One of my buddies…
… In his garage…
… Drinking Jack Daniels…
And this was way back when I was competing… like pretty regularly too.
And he turns to me and asks me, “Hey man… What are you doing to make your chicken so juicy?”
And I responded to him, “Oh it’s just this brine I use.”
… “Hey, would you mind sharing the recipe with me?”
And I uhh… I said no.
But then he thought to himself for a while.
Then he turned to me and said, “Have you ever thought about selling it?”
And man, I thought that was crazy, I mean who would ever buy a brine?
I mean there were other people doing it at the time, but I mean I thought that theirs weren’t that good, you know what I mean? Like I didn't actually like it.
I just thought I mean if I wanted a brine I would just go and cook it up myself.
So he asked how I was cooking mine, and I just explained that I don’t actually cook it, I just mix it up.
I mean there are some ingredients that are water-soluble, and I just kinda add it in and shake it about.
And that was the moment his face lit up.
He looked at me as if to say, “Man, are you serious? You gotta sell that.”
But I still didn't think anyone would buy this.
But we still kept thinking of cool names for it.
And we just looked at each other and thought, “Chicken-soak.”
That was it. That was the moment we knew.
And even now, as I write this at the end of 2022…
It’s still one of the most popular products that we have.
Because. It. Freakin’. Works.
That’s why. That’s literally what has made it so successful.
Ok. Here’s the Real Crazy Part
I never really believed that guy at first when he said that people would actually want to buy that Chicken Soak.
But what blows my mind even more is the fact that I never actually realized we sold more than $100k’s worth of the product until my accountant told me.
‘Cos back then we didn’t have that many products, you know?
So he said to me, “You realize you’ve sold over $100k of this stuff, right?”
Even then, the crazy thing was that I still acted broke.
I mean I still do it now, but that’s where it all started from.
And this makes me laugh because it actually drives my wife insane.
Like I thought to myself recently about whether or not I should buy a Ferrari.
Then I did the math, and realized I’d be spending nearly half a million on that thing.
I mean that’s just craziness to me, I’ve no idea how I could justify that.
But to each his own.
